We had a tribute show for her, and I made a book of 27 drawings/paintings of her, one for each year of her life. Here are a few of my favorites. She was a fashion plate, and loved all kinds of clothes and looks. I cut the book into thirds, so you could mix and match her head, torso and legs. She used to model for my Costumed Figure Drawing class, and some of the clothes are things I saw her wearing, but most of them were things I just imagined her wearing. Then the very next weekend was on the ADG/CDG panel at Comic Con. I also saw some old friends there, and bought a few books, and lost my camera. So no photos to post. That place is so overwhelming, that is it hard to draw there. No one is holding still, unless they are standing in line, and there is such a crowd everywhere it is hard to get a clear view of anything for more than a minute. I put the one little drawing I got up here. Also are the sketches from ICON of Craig Yoe, Todd Oldham (which he signed for me!) and D B Dowd. I have another to post, and a few things from the sketch crawl with Jeff Smith that I will post soon.

Wednesday Nights, Lisa, Richard

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 237px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/StyfrWXCRvI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/atYDzNgu30k/s320/richard01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394362020768401138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Styfq-jQ-2I/AAAAAAAAAKI/0tYcdDYPXOs/s320/lisaBlue.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394362014377245538" />

more sketches from class. I was completely floored to find a tiny, almost hidden booth at Comic Con that was selling amazing original drawings and paintings by classic illustrators from Windsor Mckay to artists from the 1980's, maybe even more current, not sure. The gallery is called Illustration House, and is in NYC. Against practicality, I purchased this original illustration by the incredible Robert Fawcett! I will try to find out from Roger Reed (one of the owners, along with his father the famous drawer Walt Reed!) when this was made, and for what publication. It is gouache, and is about 15 x 20.

Comic Con aftermath

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sm0Rxl6pq0I/AAAAAAAAAJY/2FaIuLpUhnk/s320/Nicolas09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362962274957503298" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 194px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sm0RxJb9lQI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/4KcY_UhULtc/s320/paperbag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362962267312592130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 257px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sm0RwwMEiNI/AAAAAAAAAJI/hXP3JIjGuao/s320/pinkhair.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362962260535052498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sm0RwvycUAI/AAAAAAAAAJA/256e9BWrJF0/s320/LuisNick09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362962260427558914" />

Whew. That was a LOT of people! If I go again to the con, I think I will just take photos. I didn't get much this time, on overload, and couldn't deal with the crowd to stop and get out my camera, etc. I hope the panel I was on seemed interesting to the audience. I enjoyed taking the train there, and came back on Saturday with Luis and Nicolas to really drink it all in. We really couldn't get into any of the presentations that we were after, had fun just shopping around. But taking photos and sketching would have been a great pastime there! Saw current and former students, and friends, too. Here are a few measlely sketches (one of Nicolas, 13, not wanting his face sketched). I really loved the two people dressed as paper bag hand puppets, life-size! the drawing doesn't do them justice.

Belly Dance+Comic Con!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SmJMVEyScRI/AAAAAAAAAI4/JLWWtQKlVCc/s320/Dancerlight.v01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359930431469941010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 251px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sl1pO4YGGJI/AAAAAAAAAIw/9culaAJCQVU/s320/gothdancer.rev.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358554836013291666" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sl1pOktjU8I/AAAAAAAAAIo/jxtGJxh65yQ/s320/DancercolorArt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358554830734578626" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sl1pOcFTGbI/AAAAAAAAAIg/C0SV7PC6Hns/s320/DancerColorArt.flat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358554828418259378" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/Sl1pOMopIVI/AAAAAAAAAIY/2KeadObjJKQ/s320/DancerLineArt.01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358554824271536466" />

Going to Comic Con this year (next week!) to be on a panel of Illustrators for Film. And so I decided to do an illustration in Corel Painter to take along to hand out (it was suggested that we bring something). I used bellydancing as inspiration because I have been taking a class for a year or more from the fabulous Fahtiem, and it is really FUN. My friend Paula and I went to a bellydance fair on the Queen Mary this summer and saw LOTS of outfits! Seemed like a good match, goth bellydancer and comic con. I made the pencil sketch, and tried several stabs at painting it digitally, but it was kind of a struggle. I wanted to do something that really looked 'digital' and sort of moody. So I ended up scrapping the original sketch, and did the dancer in black from scratch in Painter. I am taking a class in Painter at the moment at Studio Arts, a local tech school, from Alex Ruiz, a concept illustrator. His style and tastes are really different than mine, but I am learning some fun techniques to mess with.

If you want to see some nice tribal inspired bellydancing, check out you tube videos of Rachel Brice or for cabaret style, Fahtiem.

(Just added one more version, that I had worked on in class, using the lighting effects in Painter)

Romeo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 217px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SkBqFS7BeTI/AAAAAAAAAHo/-5uiVYRiFNI/s320/romeoKitten.sharp700.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350392996527438130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SkBqFJ3sRdI/AAAAAAAAAHg/wBPK3Ieheo4/s320/romeo.lastday.02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350392994097546706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 296px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SkBqFJUpkgI/AAAAAAAAAHY/019pgIEgP8g/s320/RomeoCarpet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350392993950568962" />
Romeo never met a person he didn't like (well, there was this one upholsterer that he took an instant dislike to, but no one else). He liked to bite my toes, and to try to steal cheese and yogurt, and to riffle through all my drawings and papers. He liked to try to bite the cursor on my Cintiq monitor. He liked to hang out and watch TV. He liked to eat flowers out of the vase, and chew certain kinds of foam rubber, and eat scotch tape. He liked his cat carrier, for some reason. He liked fishy foods, but not beef. He loved to be scratched, rubbed, petted, but NEVER to be held. He let me cut his toenails, and he liked to be brushed. He even liked to have his toes massaged, which is weird for a cat. He was very strong, and could jump very high. He liked to run his paws over the miniblinds to get my attention, and wake me up. If that didn't work, he would jump onto the dresser and knock over every photo and doodad one by one until I got up and chased him out of the bedroom. He liked to stand on my stomach and knead my biceps, first the right, then the left in the morning. He liked to lay on his back in the hall, with all his feet up in the air. He let my other cat, Moth, have the couch.

He liked being with me.

I miss you Romeo. We made some for the last union convention, and so we are doing it again. Members submit illustrations, and they are voted on at the membership meeting. This year, illustrators and designers in the CDG were encouraged to collaborate. The theme is Florida (the convention is in Orlando this year) and we were asked to include the union logo in the design somehow. I did the bathing beauties with Joanna Johnston, and the Seminole woman with Hope Hanafin. It was fun! I used the bathing beauties piece to practice working in Corel Painter, and the other is traditional watercolor. The Bathing Beauties were voted in, and the Seminole came close, and may be included if they decide to print more than four selections. I sat in on the Costume Figure Drawing Class in December (the last night of the semester I think). I usually teach this class, but took a semester off from it. Mark Michelon was in charge and doing a great job. Our former student Oksana modeled. She is Russian, and wore this little fur hat that I gave her for fun. She is wonderful model, loves clothes, and is now a costume illustrator. I start teaching this class again in February. Looking forward to it, but I can't sit and draw when I am teaching . . .

Sketchcrawl at ICON5, NYC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SMS8B3OTFcI/AAAAAAAAACE/bkjCMdhkpZk/s320/DogsOfTompkins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243522606355912130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SMS8B6ySnxI/AAAAAAAAACM/7bRtigg1-FQ/s320/Triycle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243522607312183058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SMS8CIqkhII/AAAAAAAAACU/f-e1Kjy7HRQ/s320/TompkinsSkaters.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243522611037897858" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QhxoIg_ftMk/SMS8CTq8gsI/AAAAAAAAACc/JcalJQxbLfQ/s320/KatzDeli.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243522613992260290" />

Here are some sketches from the 'Sketchcrawl' event at the Illustration Conference I attended over the 4th of July in NYC. I went to Ramstein AFB, in Germany last August to observe the AFRC Aeromedical Evacuation operations there. (See earlier post with photos). I also did an oil painting which I will post, but the photo of it is not very good. No, I did NOT work on the Iron Man suit. I sketched and painted gowns mostly, for Pepper Potts, Gwyneth Paltrow's character. I haven't seen the film yet, but will soon. So I don't know if any of these designs made it onto the screen (all the gowns were for one scene). Often they don't, they get changed somewhere down the line. The sketches are used to present ideas to the director and the actors, sometimes, and then if they don't change, they are given to 'the workroom' to build. I am sure I don't have a credit on the film either, because it is really difficult to get an on screen credit for costume illustration. Producers often only allow each department on a film a certain number of credits, and costume designers and other dept heads have to choose who to cut from the list (a lousy job!). Since the illustrator often will only work a few weeks (as was the case for me on Iron Man) compared to other crew members that work dawn to midnight for months dragging costumes around, we usually get cut. It is a shame, since the work of the illustrator can play a big role in the costume design process. I have managed to get a few screen credits for costume illustration due to the perseverance of designer Joanna Johnston. Storyboarding credits are more common for me.

Other news with me: I did some boards for "Jennifer's Body" directed by Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux, Girl Fight) and written by Diablo Cody (Juno), and for another film "Peacock" directed and written by Michael Lander (a newbie). They are both really interesting projects, in production now, and I look forward to seeing them. Currently I am doing some more boarding and prop work for "MadMen" on Showtime.

A Few Air Force Photos

<img style="display:block; This program is available through the Society Of Illustrators, and a few other groups. I had attended the christening of "The Spirit of Ronald Reagan", a C-17, at March AFB last year as part of this program. This trip was far more ambitious, involving a six day trip to Ramstein AFB in Germany. Another artist, Alex Bostic, and I were accompanied by Gene Vanderventer, an Air Force Historian, and Major Tom Carney. Our purpose was to document the work of the Air Force Reservists in the area of Aero Medical evacuations. I sketched and took a load of photos, to be used in the creation of a painting (or two) that will be given to the Air Force in return for the opportunity to observe their work. The painting will be too large to scan, but I will try to get a good photo of it to post when it is done. For the moment, it isn't even started! Although I have a good idea of what I will paint. The Air Force allows the various offices and locations to 'borrow' these works of art for their walls. I saw many of them at the base in Germany, covering the hallways and offices.
The main thing we observed was the loading and unloading of patients (soldiers) coming in from Iraq, and going from Ramstein back to the USA. The transports used were c-17s and KC-135s (a refueling plane) and we went from Andrews AFB in Maryland to Germany on a KC-135, and came back on a C-17. I did most of the sketching on these flights, since they were long, and people were holding still more often. Everyone was very gracious, allowing us to stand by and watch them work, and they were quite focused and industrious. I am looking forward to doing the painting, school is in swing now, and I will have work it in, between that and the film (Eagle Eye) that I am working on now.

Pathetic

Well, now it has been almost a year! Teaching and juggling work stuff has been alot this past year. But now that it is summer, I will post some stuff, and maybe do some drawing! Since my last post, I continued to work on Spiderwick into the fall, did some costume sketches for IronMan, went to Guatemala for a week with Luis, did more work on Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, and some work recently on 'Mad Men', a new TV series on AMC in the fall. Ah, oh well. Below are several new posts, showing some sketches from my time in Virginia. I have been back for about a month, but busy with new projects. I am doing some costume illustration for Joanna Johnston for the upcoming film "The Spiderwick Chronicles", very fun project based on a series of children's books, and I am also doing some drawings for the new 'Nancy Drew' film that I hope will be used in the end credit sequence. I can't post either of these, of course, but eventually. . .in the meantime, look at the sketches!

University of Virginia, Charlottesville

Here are a couple of mediocre watercolors I did on the campus of UVA. It was founded in 1819 (I think, or 1817?) by Thomas Jefferson, and it is a really beautiful campus, with wonderful smallish enclosed gardens behind the student housing. This housing is original, and on the main 'quad' just behind the famous Rotunda, designed by Jefferson. I was really jealous of these students, getting to live in such historic quarters, until I found out they remain heated wood burning stoves, and the bathrooms are outside! (it snows there, so that sounded pretty bad. No AC either). I also made it to Monticello, Jefferson's home just outside of town which was quite moving and humbling. I have a pencil drawing of it somewhere (not sure what I did with that sketchbook. . .)

All Around Town

Here are some other miscellaneous sketches from around Charlottesville. Sadly, there really wasn't a Swing Piggy CD. I bought one of the guys' CD (Dave with the beret) and it is nice, but isn't the same vibe as they all have together. . .The bass player is a dead ringer for my friend Dan Sweetman!

Fellini's #9

One of my favorite spots was the bar in "Fellini's #9", a restaurant (and mostly a bar) near my hotel. It is a beautiful place, with lots of live local music, much of it right outside my door on the 'downtown mall' and in the clubs, bars, lounges along the mall.

The Slate Hill Show consisted of Slate Hill Phil (Phil Slate) and whoever else he could dredge up that night. He and a girl fiddle player mostly played outside in the afternoons on the mall, and then he had a regular gig on Thursdays at the Outback Lodge down the road. He was something right out of 'Brother Where Art Thou' and I could never decide if he was some kind of anachronism for real, or if it was a constructed persona. In any case, I really enjoyed his singing and picking. These sketches are from his afternoon on the mall show. . .(on Thursdays he sported a wool pin-striped suit complete with vest and braces).

More CDG Magazine Illustrations!

Yet another installment in the History of Dress. This time Tom is working with Steve Carrel. I am finishing up soon on that, and they have been shooting all month. Of course, I can't post any of that stuff yet. The illustration at left is another from the last issue of Costume Designer, the magazine put out quarterly by the Costume Designers Guild. With teaching, and other university duties, I haven't had much time to do any other painting or sketching lately. Fellow illustrator Martha Auckland and I went out to March Airforce Base in January, to sketch the delivery of a C-17, the last of that order. I will put up some of those, and explain more about that soon.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

Well, so that's it, all the stuff I could dredge up from my files. He looked beautiful! It almost made you cry. The design was based on the same research that we did for the reindeer stuff (Santa was designed first, in fact), and we started in the sketch to keep him a little chubby. Joanna knew that the 'American' Santa is usually sort of round, and was afraid to scare people off by deviating from that (she is British, and they don't think of him as necessarily fat), but we were all glad when they decided to go with a Santa in the proportions of Chris Van Allsburg's Santa from the book. He is a noble, grand, figure, very fatherly, with a deep voice. Larger than life. My favorite in the film.

Reindeer

Joanna gave me the job of designing the details for the reindeer harness. Why? well, a large theme within the Polar Express (the film and the book) is the loss of faith that creeps in from childhood forward. These paintings are showing that the older boy is slowly losing his belief in Santa, partly due to the 'fake' department store variety and it takes a trip to the North Pole on the Polar Express to restore it (my problem with this, of course, is that Santa is. . .well, you know).

Department Store Santas

These were some sketches showing the various 'flaws' of the Department Store Santa. These are all scanned from color photocopies (as is all the film work on this blog), because as illustrators for the film industry, we don't get to keep our work. The originals were in watercolor and colored pencil. As everybody starts to work digitally, the print will be the original of course, so it won't be of much consequence.

Santa Clause 2

I worked on 'Santa Clause 2' (Tim Allen) as a costume illustrator for the designer Ingrid Ferrin. The first film, 'Santa Clause', was designed by April Ferry, and she had done a really wonderful classic Santa Costume with a sort of victorian influence. Ingrid used that as a jumping off point and added certain details like the gold embroidery. I was really excited to work on the costumes for the elves, even more so when she mentioned that she liked the ideas in Carl Larsson's paintings. She ended up using another illustrator for the elves, so I didn't get to work on them. When I saw the sketches, they didn't have any of the charm or apparent influence of Larsson. So maybe for this challenge, I will do my elves. I think that in most films, elves looks creepy or silly, not clever or magical. I never saw 'Santa Clause 2', so I really don't how they turned out in the end.

These two illustrations represent the costumes for the 'good' santa, and the 'evil' santa, which was part of the script. The evil santa had pants that were to be made of really shiny red vinyl to make him look hard and slick as opposed to the warm soft velvet of the good santa. Since costume illustrations are really about the clothing, they are not really 'character' sketches. You can't really pose the figure in a way that obscures the costume, because these are often given to the 'work room' to actually cut the patterns and make the costume. They have to remain pure in that way. Still, I try to get some gesture and personality into the sketch, as much as I can.

My Life with Santa, and other Christmas Stories

So Jeremy Spears, the 1950's Boyscout, has put up 'Designing Santa' as the challenge for December. This made me think of all the various jobs I have had that involved Santa, and other Christmas fare, and although I will draw something new before Christmas to contribute, I decided to have a Christmas retrospective first. This is a hand towel that I designed in my first 'real job' out of school, at a home textiles company in East L.A. The situation was that I had to leave a big area for his stomach, as they were going to make a 'puff' design, and cotton ball type stuffing would go into the applique, to make his stomach bulge out. Thus the odd proportions. Later, of course, the puff part was too expensive, so he was just flat. Naturally, I would have done it differently. I didn't last there more than 4 months. We all realized we weren't right for each other. I did this sketch last week in the costume figure drawing class I teach at CSULB. My friend Neena was the model. It really makes me miss being a student, and getting to sit there and draw.
